While leaving the prison at Reynosa this past Thursday I had time to speak with one of the young soldiers that was guarding the prison, as I had to wait for the entrance to clear. He was amazed that I had been visiting the prison for 17 years. As we were talking he told me that the roads were as dangerous now, or even worse, as they ever had been.
Over this past weekend the Mexican military arrested 11 people after a shootout near Puertecitos, a village near Camargo. Soldiers saw men in two vehicles shooting at men inside a storage shed, according to a news release by the Mexican Attorney General’s Office.
The armed men scattered when they saw the Mexican soldiers. The soldiers surrounded the are and captured all the men involved. Some of the men were injured and were taken to the hospital for treatment. Soldiers discovered a large arsenal nearby containing automatic weapons, automatic pistols, a grenade launcher, fragmentation grenades and ten 40-millimeter grenades. They also found thousands of rounds of ammunition, 18 vehicles and more than $46,000 in cash. The 11 men were charged with possession of handguns and explosives for means of operating an illicit operation. Being as they were probably Zetas they will most likely be incarcerated in the Santa Adelaida prison were I minister on Tuesdays.
